The unfairly maligned Mirage, perfect city car
By Frank | on Monday, March 11, 2019
I just replaced my ancient Aveo with a 2017 Mirage and I love it. Averaging 39.5 mpg, mixed city/ highway (highway is the slow crawl on the 405 or through The Crush, not cruising speed). The little 3cyl/ CVT has more get up and go than I was expecting. It's not really fast but the Car & Driver writers make it sound like you can't leave a stop light without redlining it. That is not the case. The engine is not working very hard at all. The CVT keeps the revs pretty low during normal driving but it is willing to rev higher to pass. The seats are comfy and supportive. Surprising head/ leg room, my 6' wife has no trouble in it. Not too bouncy considering how short it is. And that short overall length makes it super easy to maneuver in a parking structure, or U-turn on a residential street with room to spare. Reliability will be revealed as the years tick by but Mitsubishi has a decent track record. The little Mirage gets hateful reviews from the professional "driving enthusiasts" but I'd love to see them drive their stick shift 911s and M5s on SoCal freeways during rush hour. It's a gas sipping, U-turn anywhere, park anywhere, urban commuter for the budget conscious. Which is perfect for many of us.… - 5.0
perfect as a budget car.
By ldduck | on Monday, May 22, 2023
I give it a 5 out 5 as a budget car. This car is very reliable, easy drive and has great simple features. Most of all is very easy on the wallet when it comes to spending money on gas. The car is comfortable. It has enough pick up and speed for normal driving, even getting on the highway. I set cruise control at 70mph on the turnpike and it cruises great. People that say car is slow or cheap are probably comparing it to sports and luxury cars. This is a budget friendly car that gets the job done.… - 5.0
My first car
By Duncan | on Wednesday, July 19, 2023
Bought this car used after I got my license at 21. It has held up well, and is now over 100k miles. I have had to replace the breaks and serpentine belt, as expected, because these need replaced after many miles. Car is easy on the wallet in terms of price, gas, and insurance. I also looked at new civic when I was going to get my first car, and I couldn't justify spending so much money on a Honda. After all, any car in and of itself is a luxury, which many people around the world would die for. I'm just grateful I have one, even if its cheap.…
